How to Use a Nasal Spray – Explained by Dr Darakshan Parveen

Hello, my name is Dr. Darakshan Parveen from Nagpur. Today, I’ll be explaining the correct way to use a nasal spray, commonly prescribed for allergic rhinitis.

Before using the spray, always shake the bottle well. If you’re using it for the first time or after a gap, you need to prime the spray. This means pressing it a few times into the air until a fine mist appears—sometimes the medicine doesn’t come out in the first spray.

Next, bend your head slightly upward, gently insert the nozzle into one nostril, and press the other nostril closed. Breathe in gently through your nose as you spray. Repeat the same process on the other side.

If you’ve been prescribed two sprays per nostril, wait 1–2 seconds between each puff.

Sometimes, the medicine may drip down the throat, leaving a slightly bitter taste. This is normal. You can gargle with a sip of water or simply swallow if it doesn’t bother you.

Use the spray exactly as advised by your doctor for the best results.
